Ever since I can remember, my family has had animals as part of our family, and I have always had a special love for horses.
I'm not what a lot of people would consider your typical horse rider. I'm built on the stocky side, for one thing, and I always have been, I've been riding since I was 7 years old, and I was constantly in trouble for jumping the higher parts of the cross poles during my lessons. I dreamed of becoming a professional rider and owning my own yard (perfectly respectable dreams for a child with no sense of the financial implications). Still, I kept riding and worked in the horse industry in one form or another since I left school at 17 (I was the baby of the school year). Like most people, I have fallen off more times than I can count over the years, and as a child I would just laugh and get straight back on. Children bounce after all. I became a bit wary after that, I didn't bounce like I |
used to, but I kept riding.
Until disaster struck, I fractured my coccyx in 2009 after bailing off my horse. Although I kept riding and the accident didn't phase me, I was in a lot of pain. Then I completely lost my confidence after an accident in 2010 where the concussion of the impact with the arena surface fractured my L1 vertebrae. Two bones in two years!! Even my unflappable confidence took a dive after that. It took a long time to heal and even longer before I was ready to ride again, but thanks to a friend who loaned me a horse I slowly got back into the swing of things. It was on this horse that I started competing in earnest, with dressage, show jumping and my first one day event. Much to my families disgust and pride, I have not looked back since catching the competition bug. I have competed as an amateur at various BRC and local shows, and with my latest horse have even managed to qualify for and compete at several championship competitions in 2016. |
